THE MEMORIES THEMSELVES

Some years ago I was involved in Brian Getnick’s performance art project “Memories” (+ Corey Fogel, Ezra Buchla) and we recorded a bunch of songs. That album is now available as a cassette or digital download from Practical Records!

Brian also made gorgeous music videos for the songs that have just been released to Vimeo. Here’s one for “The Eel:”

Calendar Pick: Claire Cronin / Wednesday, Feb. 24 @ Dodd Galleries

Thanks to Gabe Vodicka and Flagpole for this mention!

“UGA creative writing PhD candidate and recent Los Angeles transplant Claire Cronin specializes in a deceptively delicate style of folk music that quickly dissipates but leaves its mark behind—the sound of faint memories, warm breath in winter. Over and Through, a collection of 10 songs culled from the past several years of writing and recording and released last September on cassette via the Ba Da Bing label, is a fine showcase of Cronin’s raw talent, featuring shades of Jason Molina and Chan Marshall. She’ll appear on campus in the Dodd Galleries for a special afternoon performance, joined by Ezra Buchla on viola and tenor guitar.”

OVER AND THROUGH // cassette and download

from Ba Da Bing Records:

“In anticipation of Came Down A Storm, Claire Cronin’s full band collaboration with John Dieterich (Deerhoof) which Ba Da Bing will release next Spring, we present this Best Of compiling her solo songs of the past few years. Cronin’s songs are sparse, deep, and dark, and her gravelly voice reaches unexpected levels of emotional beauty. There’s something Jason Molina going on here, by way of Karen Dalton and Neil Young. Cronin is currently working towards a PhD in poetry at University of Georgia, and her lyrics reflect the intelligence and insight of someone so devoted to the written word.”

Lions & Vultures write-up

“The first time I posted about Claire Cronin’s music (almost a year ago, crazy) I thought about snowfall, and about how her music matched that feeling. Now here I am, about to spend my first winter away from Wisconsin (not a single flake out here so far), repeatedly playing her two newest tracks.

The FOOTBALL Ep is still the hauntingly beautiful, incredibly thoughtful songwriting that I loved from her previous release. But these two, especially For What It Is Worth, have a nice anecdotal feel to them. These moments are dark, but she presents them so delicately, that I think we all feel a little better after listening.”
